Snowy Scene
Fine art Japanese wood block print, "Christmas Snows", created in 1923 by the American artist and craftsman Wharton Esherick (1887-1970).
This print depicts the house of Esherick's neighbor, Dorothy Cantrell, in a snowstorm. The sky and a large portion of the house are filled with stippled marks and fine diagonal lines to give the impression of a blizzard. The work is a representation of Esherick's early career, as he began as a painter but transitioned to woodcuts in the 1920s. This particular print was part of a series of winter-themed woodcuts, including "December" and "January".
Wharton Esherick is known as the "father of studio furniture" and was a significant figure in the American modern design and studio craft movements, celebrated for his sculptural wood pieces and the way he applied sculptural principles to functional objects.
