Divine Comedy 4
Fine art print by Salvador Dali, The Two Circles of Spirits
is a woodcut print by Salvador Dalí, created in 1963 as part of his series illustrating Dante Alighieri's epic poem, The Divine Comedy. The specific canto it illustrates is from the "Paradise" section of the poem, and it is also known as "Paradise, Canto 16" or "The Apparition of the Ancestor".
The full suite of illustrations for The Divine Comedy consists of 100 color woodcuts created by Dalí between 1960 and 1964 from 100 watercolors he painted from 1951 to 1960. The project was originally commissioned by the Italian government to commemorate the 700th anniversary of Dante's birth, but the commission was ultimately given to an Italian artist after public outcry over a Spanish painter illustrating the work of Italy's most famous poet. Dalí continued the project independently, and the resulting series is considered a significant part of his body of work.
