The film's plot follows Jimmy Grant, Reagan's character, who is a reckless pilot and a womanizer. After witnessing the courage of Londoners during a German air raid and the death of a child, he is moved to join the RAF. While in the RAF, he struggles to become a team player and his reckless flying leads to the death of a comrade. In a final act of redemption, he takes the place of a friend on a dangerous bombing mission over Nazi territory, successfully completing the mission but ultimately crashing to his death. The film is based on the Eagle Squadrons, American volunteer pilots who flew for the Royal Air Force during the war.
