Plan 9 From Outer Space
One sheet, Plan 9 from Outer Space
is a 1959 American independent science fiction-horror film directed by Edward D. Wood Jr. The movie's plot centers on extraterrestrials who, after several failed attempts to contact humanity, implement "Plan 9," which involves resurrecting the dead to create an army of zombies (referred to as "ghouls"). The aliens' goal is to stop humanity from developing a weapon that could destroy the universe.
The film is widely known for its reputation as "the worst film ever made," a title given to it by authors Harry and Michael Medved in their 1980 book The Golden Turkey Awards. Despite this, it has achieved a large cult following and is celebrated as a "so-bad-it's-good" classic.
The cast includes Gregory Walcott, Mona McKinnon, Tor Johnson, and "Vampira" (Maila Nurmi). It also posthumously bills Bela Lugosi, using silent footage that Wood had shot for another, unfinished film before Lugosi's death in 1956. For other scenes, a body double was used who covered his face with a cape. The film's low budget is evident in its simple sets, noticeable use of stock footage, and flying saucers that were made from plastic model kits.
