50Th Anniversary Of The China Clipper
One sheet, poster commemorating the 50th anniversary of the China Clipper's inaugural flight
. The original China Clipper, a Martin M-130 flying boat, completed the first commercial transpacific airmail service on November 29, 1935, departing from Alameda, California, and arriving in Manila, Philippines. This poster was created in 1985 to celebrate this historic event.
The poster depicts the flying boat soaring over the San Francisco Bay, with a depiction of the Golden Gate Bridge in the background. The route map at the bottom of the poster outlines the flight's journey, which included stops in Honolulu, Midway Island, Wake Island, and Guam before reaching Manila. To commemorate the anniversary, Pan Am also launched a special "China Clipper II," a Boeing 747, to retrace the original route.
The poster was created by the artist Dong Kingman and is part of the collection at the National Air and Space Museum.
