Tube Map
40 X 50 Royal quad, This is a
historical London Underground map that predates the famous 1933 diagrammatic design by Harry Beck. Before Beck's revolutionary design, maps of the Underground were typically geographical, often superimposed over a street map of London. This made the central stations appear very close together while stations on the outskirts were spaced far apart, making the map difficult to read. The map in the image shows the rail lines laid out in a way that attempts to represent their actual geographic locations in relation to the River Thames and other city features.
The map is similar to the ones designed by F. H. Stingemore, who was the official Underground map designer from 1926 to 1932. Stingemore's maps were known for slightly expanding the central area to improve legibility.
