is a 1960 East German/Polish science fiction film, also known by its original title, Der schweigende Stern (The Silent Star). It is based on the 1951 novel The Astronauts by Polish author Stanis?aw Lem.
Plot Summary
The film is set in the future, where a mysterious magnetic spool found in the Gobi Desert is discovered to be from an alien spaceship that crashed in Siberia in 1908. An international crew of scientists and astronauts is assembled to fly to Venus to investigate the origins of the spool and its creators.
During the flight, the crew deciphers the message on the spool, which reveals that the Venusians were planning to invade Earth by subjecting it to a radiation bombardment. Upon landing on Venus, the crew finds a dead, radioactive planet, a civilization that destroyed itself in a global nuclear war before it could execute its plan.
The American version of the film is a dubbed and edited version that is significantly shorter than the original. It is noted for its pacifist message and impressive set designs and special effects for its time.
The film has also been featured on the television series Mystery Science Theater 3000.
