Okito
French, Okito
was the stage name of Tobias "Theo" Leendert Bamberg, a Dutch magician from a family of six generations of magicians. Born in Amsterdam in 1875, he performed an Oriental-style magic act and was a renowned inventor and builder of magic props. The name "Okito" is an anagram of "Tokio" (the spelling of Tokyo at the time).
A childhood ice-skating accident left Bamberg nearly deaf, which led him to perform an act consisting entirely of pantomime. He invented many magic effects, including the Okito coin box, a popular prop used in coin magic. Bamberg's son, David Bamberg, also became a well-known magician who performed under the name Fu Manchu.
Okito was frequently billed on posters as "The Mystic" and is highly regarded by magic collectors for his handmade props. He passed away in 1963 in Chicago.
