Halfsheet, magic, stone litho, Chevalier Cliquot
was a sword swallower and performer known as "the world's greatest sword phenomenon" and "the world's greatest sword swallower". The poster advertises his "scientific performances" before physicians and students at Rush Medical College in Chicago and the University of Liverpool in England.
The performance included feats such as swallowing a blade with dumbbells attached, a long bayonet, and multiple swords at once. One of his most notable acts involved a "lighted sword" where a light bulb at the end of a lead blade would illuminate, with the claim that the electric light penetrated through his body. The lithograph poster was created by Friedländer in Hamburg in 1902.
Rush Medical College, founded in 1837, is the first medical school in Chicago and one of the earliest in the Midwest. It is named after Benjamin Rush, a physician who signed the Declaration of Independence. The college has a history of affiliations and mergers, and it became a part of the Rush University Medical Center in 1969.
The University of Liverpool was established in 1881 as University College Liverpool and became an independent university in 1903. It was the first UK university to establish departments in oceanography, civic design, architecture, and biochemistry. Ten Nobel laureates have been affiliated with the university.
