White Stag Torches
Halfsheet, White Stag
was originally a skiwear manufacturer founded in Portland, Oregon, in the early 20th century. The company began as the Hirsch-Weis Manufacturing Company, which made outdoor clothing and supplies for industries like logging. In 1929, Harold S. Hirsch, the founder's son and a skier, started a line of downhill skiing apparel and named it "White Stag," a literal English translation of the German names "Weis" (white) and "Hirsch" (stag).
The brand quickly became popular, especially after World War II, and expanded to include other sportswear. The company was purchased by Warnaco Group in 1966, which later sold the White Stag trademark to Walmart in 2003. For a time, Walmart used the trademark on a line of women's casual clothing and accessories. In 2018, Walmart began to phase out the White Stag brand to make way for new in-house brands.
