About the Film

Release Date: November 15, 1935.
Plot Summary: The film follows a sly business manager, Otis B. Driftwood (Groucho), and the wacky friends of two opera singers, Fiorello (Chico) and Tomasso (Harpo). The trio helps the singers, Rosa and Ricardo, achieve success in America while humiliating their snobbish rivals. The plot includes the famous "stateroom scene," where numerous people crowd into a tiny cabin on a ship.
Significance: This was the first Marx Brothers film made for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) after leaving Paramount Pictures, and the first without their brother Zeppo. The film was a major box office success and is considered one of their all-time classics. It was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 1993.
