The Circus, The Stepladder
Lobby Card Charlie Chaplin silent film released in 1928, written, produced, and directed by Charlie Chaplin, who also stars in the movie as his iconic character, "The Tramp".
The film's plot centers on the Tramp, who is mistakenly chased by police into a circus. His unintentional antics during the chase cause the audience to roar with laughter, leading the ringmaster to hire him as a clown. The Tramp falls in love with the ringmaster's stepdaughter, a circus rider, but she is in love with a tightrope walker. The film is known for its blend of slapstick comedy, romance, and emotional depth.
Despite its critical acclaim upon release, Chaplin later allowed the film to fall into obscurity and did not mention it in his autobiography, likely due to the troubled and difficult circumstances of its production, which included a studio fire, a tax investigation, and a highly publicized divorce from his wife, Lita Grey. The film was re-released in 1970 with a new musical score composed and sung by Chaplin himself. For his work on the film, Chaplin was given a special Academy Award for his "versatility and genius in writing, acting, directing and producing".
