Chairman Mao
One sheet Chinese Propaganda from the Cultural Revolution era.
The poster features a large portrait of Mao Zedong, the founding father of the People's Republic of China, with his right arm raised in a wave to a crowd of people below. The crowd consists of workers, soldiers, and students, many holding "Little Red Books" and banners.
The text on the poster is a political message. The large characters at the top left say " which translates to "Long Live the Great Chinese Communist Party". The text in the center-right box reads " which translates to "The 'July 3rd' and 'July 24th' notices are Chairman Mao’s great wartime deployments!". The bottom text " translates to "Under the leadership of the proletarian headquarters led by Chairman Mao with Vice-Chairman Lin, unify understanding, unify steps, and unify actions".
The poster was created to promote the "July 3rd" and "July 24th" proclamations of 1968, which were issued by the Chinese Communist Party's Central Committee in response to escalating factional violence during the Cultural Revolution. These proclamations aimed to restore order and end the widespread destruction caused by the Red Guards.
