Cranach
Fine art linocut by Picasso, Buste de femme d'après Cranach le Jeune
is a 1958 linocut by Pablo Picasso. The work is a linocut on paper, and an interpretation of a painting by the Renaissance artist Lucas Cranach the Younger. The original painting, Portrait of a young lady, was created in 1564.
Picasso created this print when he was 77 years old, using five layers of color to produce a vivid and tactile surface. The artist continually explored the technical and expressive potential of various mediums, and this piece demonstrates his use of linocut for its rich colors and decorative abstraction of form. The work is considered one of Picasso's most technically complex linocuts because it is one of the only major pieces that respects the traditional technique of cutting individual blocks for each color.
The piece is also known as Portrait of a young woman, after Cranach the Younger
