Le Thermogene
One sheet vintage advertising poster for
Le Thermogène, a historical medicated wadding product. The artwork, created by the renowned Italian poster artist Leonetto Cappiello in 1909, is considered a classic example of modern advertising design.
Product Details

Product: Le Thermogène (Thermogen) was a medicated cotton or wadding pad.
Active Ingredient: The wadding was impregnated with an extract of capsicum (cayenne pepper), which generated a heating sensation when applied to the skin.
Purpose: It was used as a heating pad or poultice to relieve various ailments, including:
Coughs and chest colds
Rheumatism and lumbago
Sore throats and neuralgia
Side stitches and general pain

Poster Design
The poster is iconic for its bold and simple design, a departure from the ornate Art Nouveau style of the time. It features a bright green, fire-breathing figure (sometimes described as a devil or a clown) holding the orange-colored product to his chest, effectively illustrating the product's heat-generating properties and therapeutic effects. The French text reads: "Le Thermogène engendre la chaleur et combat: toux, rhumatismes, points de côté, etc." (Le Thermogene generates heat and fights: coughs, rheumatism, side stitches, etc.).
