Revenge Of The Jedi
One sheet poster for the film that was originally titled
Revenge of the Jedi, which was the working title for what ultimately became Return of the Jedi.
Title Change and History
Original Title: The third film in the original Star Wars trilogy was announced with the title Revenge of the Jedi, and promotional materials, including thousands of these teaser posters designed by Drew Struzan, were produced and distributed in 1982.
Reason for Change: In December 1982, before the film's release, George Lucas decided to change the title. He determined that "revenge" was an action associated with the Dark Side and the Sith, whereas a true Jedi would not seek vengeance. He felt "Return of the Jedi" was more appropriate, especially as it also alluded to the return of Anakin Skywalker from Darth Vader.
Release: The film was released with the new title Return of the Jedi on May 25, 1983.
Collector's Item: The posters with the Revenge title were recalled, and remaining stock (around 6,800 copies) was sold to fan club members, making original copies highly sought after by collectors.
Future Use: The title "Revenge" was eventually used for the prequel trilogy's final film, Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005).
