Commander Verney Lovett Cameron's route across Africa between 1873 and 1875. Cameron was the first European explorer to cross the African continent from the East Coast to the West Coast in its central latitudes.
Expedition Details

Objective: Cameron was originally sent by the Royal Geographical Society in a relief expedition for Dr. David Livingstone. After learning of Livingstone's death, he continued with an expedition of geographical exploration.
Route: His journey began on the east coast near Zanzibar and ended on the west coast at Benguela, in present-day Angola, a journey of approximately 4,100 km.
Key Discoveries:
He explored the southern part of Lake Tanganyika and established that its outlet was the Lukuga River, a tributary of the Congo River.
He correctly suspected that the Lualaba River was the main source of the Congo River, though he was prevented from following it to prove the connection.
He traced the watershed between the Congo and Zambezi rivers for hundreds of miles, collecting valuable geographic data.
Publications: An account of his travels was published in a book titled Across Africa in 1877, which included this map and detailed his observations and suggestions for opening up the continent to commerce.
Significance: Upon his return to England in 1876, Cameron was widely acclaimed and became a Companion of the Bath (CB) and received the Founder's Medal of the Royal Geographical Society.
