Production: The film was shot entirely on the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) lot in Culver City, which included elaborate replicas of Manhattan landmarks like Pennsylvania Station. Garland requested Vincente Minnelli to take over directing the film, and the two became engaged by the end of the production
