Plot
The story follows Larry Talbot, an aristocrat who returns to his family's ancestral home in Wales after his brother's death. While there, he falls in love with a local shopkeeper, Gwen Conliffe. One night, while coming to the rescue of Gwen's friend, he is bitten by a wolf and in turn kills the animal. He soon discovers the animal was a gypsy fortune teller named Bela (played by Bela Lugosi) in werewolf form, and Bela's mother, Maleva, informs Larry that he is now cursed to become a werewolf himself when the moon is full.
Legacy
The Wolf Man is one of the definitive Universal Monsters films and is largely responsible for establishing much of the werewolf mythology in popular culture, including the full moon trigger, the use of silver weapons, and the rhyming poem associated with the curse. It was a critical and financial success and led to several sequels and a 2010 remake starring Benicio del Toro.
