Gion Festival Details

Dates: The festival runs throughout July, with main public events centered around mid-month.
Main Processions: The major float parades (Yamaboko Junko) take place on July 17 (Former Procession) and July 24 (Latter Procession) each year.
Yoiyama Evenings: The three nights preceding each main parade (July 14-16 and July 21-23) feature street parties with food stalls, music, and illuminated floats.
Floats: The floats, some towering up to 25 meters and weighing up to 12 tons, are intricately decorated and often referred to as "moving museums". They are assembled using traditional techniques without a single nail.
Significance: Originating in 869 to appease the gods during a plague, the festival is now a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage event and one of Japan's most famous and largest festivals.
