Apparition at the Circus
Fine art lithograph print by the acclaimed Russian-French artist Marc Chagall
. The work has two known titles depending on the edition:
Apparition at the Circus (L'Apparition au Cirque): This title is associated with the 1963 original lithograph, which was part of the Chagall Lithographe Volume II catalogue raisonné.
Engagement at the Circus (Fiançailles au Cirque): This title refers to a later, separate original lithograph created in 1983, which was published in a limited, hand-signed and numbered edition of 50 copies.
Both works feature Chagall's signature dreamlike style and circus motifs. The value of these prints varies significantly based on factors such as:
Year of Creation: The 1963 version typically ranges from around $300 to over $4,800 USD, while the 1983 signed edition can fetch between $10,000 and $20,000+ USD at auction.
Signature: The 1963 prints published in the book are often not signed, while the limited 1983 prints were hand-signed in pencil by Chagall.
Condition and Provenance: The condition of the paper and a verifiable history of ownership (provenance) greatly influence the market price.
Edition Type: An original lithograph printed in a limited run on quality paper (like Arches) is more valuable than a mass-produced photomechanical reprint or poster.
