Kizhi Pogost and its Churches

Location and Site: The Kizhi Pogost (meaning "enclosure") is a historical site on Kizhi Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site located in Lake Onega, Russia. The entire island functions as an open-air museum preserving numerous historic wooden buildings moved there for preservation.
The Church of the Transfiguration: This is the taller, more intricate structure pictured, built in 1714. It is famous as a masterpiece of wooden architecture with 22 domes, constructed almost entirely from interlocking logs and joints, reportedly without using a single nail (except in the roof shingles).
The Church of the Intercession: Located next to the Transfiguration Church, this smaller, 9-dome structure (built in 1764) served as the "winter" or heated church for services during the cold months.
