Plot Summary
The film is set and shot on location in Lisbon, Portugal, and centers around Robert John Evans (Ray Milland), an American smuggler. He is hired by Aristides Mavros (Claude Rains), a wealthy and unscrupulous Greek businessman, for a high-stakes assignment: to sneak an imprisoned American industrialist, Lloyd Merrill, out of communist territory.
The job becomes complex when Evans meets Sylvia Merrill (Maureen O'Hara), the industrialist's wife, who is funding the rescue operation. It soon becomes clear that Sylvia may have ulterior motives, potentially hoping her husband does not return alive so she can inherit his fortune. A battle of wits, morals, and double-crosses ensues among the characters, with romance and danger adding to the intrigue.
