Description: The artwork is a nocturnal street scene in Suzhou, China, viewed through a stone archway. It depicts a group of people, presumably beggars or street characters, gathered in an alleyway illuminated by subtle light from shops and lanterns. Keith was known for her "shrewd and sympathetic observation of the commonplace, everyday happenings" and the depiction of the "pitiful poverty of the beggars" during her travels in the Far East between 1915 and 1924.

Context
Keith learned the traditional Japanese woodblock printing techniques and her works gained popularity in Japan, London, and New York. This particular print is a notable example of her work in China, a place that greatly fascinated her.
