The story is set primarily at Blandings Castle, the idyllic home of the absent-minded Lord Emsworth. The plot revolves around Lord Emsworth's concern for his prized pig, the Empress of Blandings, who is threatened with a slimming cure by the cantankerous Duke of Dunstable.
Lord Emsworth calls upon the help of the charismatic and mischievous Uncle Fred (Frederick Altamont Cornwallis Twistleton, Fifth Earl of Ickenham). Uncle Fred, an expert in creating chaos and spreading "sweetness and light," arrives at the castle disguised as the eminent nerve specialist Sir Roderick Glossop, leading to a series of comedic mix-ups, imposters, and schemes to rescue the pig and reunite young lovers.
