French ! Panel movie poster for the 1982 American neo-noir mystery film,
Hammett, directed by Wim Wenders and executive produced by Francis Ford Coppola. The film is a fictional account of the real-life mystery writer Dashiell Hammett's involvement in a complex case.
Plot Summary
Set in San Francisco in 1928, Dashiell "Sam" Hammett (Frederic Forrest), a former Pinkerton detective turned pulp fiction writer, is living a quiet life when his old friend and mentor, Jimmy Ryan (Peter Boyle), shows up unexpectedly asking for help. Ryan needs assistance tracking down a missing Chinese cabaret actress named Crystal Ling (Lydia Lei) in Chinatown, a case that Hammett is more familiar with due to his past work.
Drawn back into his former life to honor a debt, Hammett soon finds himself embroiled in a multi-layered plot involving corrupt police officers, powerful city figures, a million-dollar blackmail scheme, and a tough-talking "gunsel". The line between reality and fiction blurs as the people and events he encounters begin to mirror the characters and plots of his own stories. Ultimately, Hammett must use his detective instincts to navigate the dangerous, corrupt underworld of the city, becoming more disillusioned in the process, before returning to his typewriter to write about his experiences.
