Music Sheet
Original sheet music, hand painted on paper a leaf from an illuminated manuscript, likely an
antiphonary or gradual, which contains Gregorian chant written in Latin using square notation. The text corresponds to liturgical chants related to the Ascension of Jesus Christ.
Manuscript Details
Content: The Latin text includes the words "...et accedens revolvit lapidem et sedebat super eum" (And coming, he rolled back the stone, and sat upon it), and "...mihi omnis potestas in celo et in terra alleluia" (All power is given to me in heaven and in earth, alleluia). These phrases are associated with the biblical accounts of Christ's resurrection and ascension, specifically related to the Gospel of Matthew and the feast of the Ascension.
Notation: The music is written in black ink on a five-line red stave using square neume notation, a standard form for plainsong in the medieval and Renaissance periods.
Illumination: The page features elaborate decoration with a border of green vines and red and blue floral motifs. The initial "A" in the second major section is particularly ornate, featuring a small illustration of a seated, tonsured monk in a brown habit within the letter, which visually represents a figure from the religious house where the manuscript was used.
Origin/Date: Based on the style of the script and illumination, similar leaves are often dated to the 15th to 17th centuries and attributed to regions like Spain or Italy.
This type of manuscript was a large-format choir book designed for use in monastic settings so that many monks could read from it simultaneously during a service.
