Synopsis
The plot centers on Captain Stephen Jameson (O'Brien), a former army officer appointed to implement reform at San Quentin prison. Before beginning his new job, he meets and falls in love with a nightclub singer, May Kennedy (Sheridan). By coincidence, May's brother, Joe "Red" Kennedy (Bogart), is arrested for robbery that same evening and sent to San Quentin.
Jameson tries to reform "Red," which initially works, but an envious guard and a hardened criminal named "Sailor Boy" Hansen manipulate Red into believing Jameson is taking advantage of his sister. Enraged, Red joins Hansen's escape plan, leading to an exciting car chase finale. After the escape results in tragedy and Red realizes his mistake, he attempts to return to the prison before dying, proving Jameson's reform methods were ultimately correct.
