Company Background
Imperial and International Communications Limited was formed in 1929 from a merger of British cable and wireless interests to resolve issues with competition, taking over the patents and licenses of Marconi's Wireless Telegraph Company. The new "Empiradio" shortwave system was highly effective and took significant business away from the older submarine cable networks. The company later changed its name to Cable & Wireless Ltd. in 1934.
