Peoples Republic Of China
One sheet vintage
Pan Am advertisement promoting travel to the People's Republic of China, featuring the Great Wall. Pan American World Airways was a pioneer in transpacific travel, initially starting air mail service to Hong Kong in the 1930s with its "China Clipper" flying boats.
Following the 1949 revolution, commercial aviation between the United States and mainland China ceased for some time. Pan Am's return to China with scheduled passenger service occurred in 1981, after the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. This specific poster or timetable cover is from that era, around 1981, when the Great Wall at Badaling had recently been restored for tourism, as indicated by the sparse vegetation and lack of large crowds in the photo compared to today's images.
