Artwork Details
Artist: Lucien Boucher (1889-1971).
Creation Year: This specific double-hemisphere design was created around 1950 or 1952, a time that marked the expansion of Air France's global routes.
Style: The map is rendered in a unique mid-century style, combining Art Deco influences with surrealistic elements and traditional painting.
Imagery:
The map uses two large globes to display the airline's routes, highlighted in red.
The surrounding border and areas between the globes are richly decorated with vignettes of world cultures, historical sights, exotic flora, and fauna.
Illustrations within the oceans include mythical creatures, sea monsters, and tall ships, paying homage to earlier cartographic works of the 16th and 17th centuries.
Small images of Air France aircraft, such as the Douglas DC-4 or Lockheed Constellation, can be seen along the routes.
Purpose: The posters were primarily distributed to travel agencies as promotional material to showcase the extensive network and accessibility of Air France during the "golden age of air travel".
