Film Details

Plot: Set in 1941, an intellectual New York playwright named Barton Fink accepts a lucrative offer to write film scripts in Hollywood. Staying at the eerie, run-down Hotel Earle, he struggles with severe writer's block while trying to write a B-movie wrestling script. His life becomes increasingly bizarre as he interacts with his friendly but mysterious neighbor, an insurance salesman named Charlie Meadows (John Goodman), and other eccentric characters.
Themes: The film explores themes of the writing process, artistic integrity versus commercialism, the superficiality of Hollywood, and the relationship between intellectuals and "the common man".
Awards: Barton Fink premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May 1991, where it achieved a rare sweep by winning the Palme d'Or (Best Picture), the Award for Best Director (Joel Coen), and the Award for Best Actor (John Turturro), the first film to ever win all three major awards at the festival. It was also nominated for three Academy Awards.
