Kona Kai Restaurant
Blueprint plans for tiki architectural drawing of custom-designed
Tiki statues created for the Kona Kai Restaurant at the Marriott Motor Hotel in Lower Merion, Pennsylvania. The drawings were produced by the Los Angeles architectural firm of Armet & Davis, renowned for their "Googie" style coffee shops and mid-century modern designs.
Project Details

Restaurant: Kona Kai Restaurant
Location: Marriott Motor Hotel in Bala Cynwyd (Lower Merion), Pennsylvania
Architects: Armet & Davis A.I.A., located in Los Angeles, California
Significance: The Philadelphia Kona Kai was the flagship in a chain of Polynesian-themed restaurants Marriott developed to compete with Hilton's Trader Vic's and Sheraton's Kon Tiki restaurants. No expense was spared, and nearly every decorative element, including these carvings, was custom-designed.
Status: The hotel and restaurant closed and were demolished in 1985. Many of the artifacts were saved and are now housed in Max's South Seas Hideaway in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

The Drawings
The drawing features six different views of the carved figures, showcasing various facial expressions and body positions. The text identifies them as "FRONT", "REAR", "SIDE" views, and includes a note for "COLUMN CARVINGS". The style is indicative of the mid-20th century "Tiki culture" movement, which was a popular theme for exotic restaurants and bars.
