Synopsis: The film is set in post-World War II Germany and follows Maria Braun, who marries a soldier just before he disappears in the war. To survive in the rubble and poverty of post-war Germany, she uses her beauty and ambition to rise through society during the country's "economic miracle" of the 1950s, all while remaining loyal to her husband's memory and eventual return.
Significance: It was Fassbinder's biggest international box-office success and is the first part of his "BRD Trilogy" (Bundesrepublik Deutschland Trilogy), which also includes Lola (1981) and Veronika Voss (1982).
