Artwork Details
Subject: The central image depicts the biblical story of the Ascension of the Prophet Elijah (Elie himmelsfärd in Swedish). Elijah is shown being taken to heaven in a fiery horse-drawn chariot, while his successor Elisha (Elifa) looks on from below.
Style: The painting is an example of kurbits folk art, a distinctive decorative painting style originating from the Dalarna region of Sweden. The text at the top, written in old Swedish, roughly translates to: "Elias went to Simla with a burning wagon and Elifa saw this happen and cried, My father, my father".
Original Location: The original wall painting dates back to around 1840 and is housed at the Nordiska Muséet (Nordic Museum) in Stockholm, Sweden.
