Sumatra
One sheet
vintage travel poster titled "Sumatra". It was designed by the Canadian artist Carl Shreve (1901-1988) and issued in the late 1930s or 1950s for the Dutch East Indies' tourism promotion of the island.
The stunning poster showcases a colorful rendering of the Nias war dance, or Fataele, a key part of the culture of the Nias people native to an island off the western coast of Sumatra. The figures are depicted with traditional weapons (Balato) and shields (Baluse).
