Plot Summary
The film follows Travis Bickle, a mentally unstable Vietnam War veteran and insomniac who takes a job as a night-shift taxi driver in New York City. Disgusted by the crime and moral decay he witnesses, Travis becomes increasingly alienated and obsessed with "cleaning up" the city.
His descent into vigilantism is fueled by his failed attempts to connect with a political campaign worker named Betsy and his fixation on "rescuing" Iris, a 12-year-old child prostitute. Travis buys multiple firearms, shaves his head into a mohawk, and ultimately engages in a bloody shootout at the brothel where Iris works, killing her pimp and others.
