About the Song and Project

Cause: The song was organized by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure after seeing harrowing news reports of the 1983–1985 famine in Ethiopia.
Recording: An assembly of major British and Irish pop stars of the era gathered and recorded the song in a single day, November 25, 1984, at Sarm West Studios in London.
Impact: Released on December 3, 1984, it became the fastest-selling single in UK chart history at the time and a Christmas number one hit, ultimately raising approximately £8 million within its first year, far exceeding initial expectations.
