Meet the Beatles
Half sheet original promotional advertisement used by Capitol Records in early 1964 to launch the Beatles in the U.S. and ignite "Beatlemania". The ad was distributed to record stores in the weeks leading up to the band's famous Ed Sullivan Show appearances in February 1964.
Advertisement Details
Release Date: The single "I Want to Hold Your Hand" was rush-released by Capitol Records on December 26, 1963, due to unexpected demand after a DC radio station played a "smuggled" copy. The Meet the Beatles! album, also promoted in this ad, was released on January 20, 1964, and quickly hit number one on the charts.
Purpose: Capitol Records used this material as part of an aggressive marketing blitz to capitalize on the growing British sensation. The ad mentions key American TV appearances that would cement their fame, including the Jack Paar Show (Jan. 3) and the Ed Sullivan Show (Feb. 9).
Cultural Impact: The campaign was highly successful, helping to launch the "British Invasion" and providing a much-needed cultural lift to America following the assassination of President Kennedy.
This type of original store display is considered a "Holy Grail" item among Beatles collectors.
