The Bowery Boys Meet the Monsters
One sheet vintage movie poster for the 1954 comedy-horror film
"The Bowery Boys Meet the Monsters".
Film Overview
Released on June 6, 1954, the movie follows the slapstick adventures of Slip Mahoney (Leo Gorcey) and Sach Jones (Huntz Hall). The plot begins with the boys seeking a vacant lot to use as a baseball field for neighborhood kids. This search leads them to the eerie Gravesend Mansion, inhabited by a dysfunctional family of "monsters".
The "Monsters" and Cast
The film features a variety of "monsters" who each have nefarious plans for the boys:
Mad Scientists: Anton (Lloyd Corrigan) and Derek (John Dehner) Gravesend want to transplant the boys' brains into their experiments.
Gorog the Robot: An 8-foot tall remote-controlled robot intended for Slip's brain.
Cosmos the Gorilla: A savage ape intended for Sach's brain.
The Vampire: Francine (Laura Mason), a niece who behaves like a vampiress and wants the boys' blood.
The Man-Eating Plant: Amelia (Ellen Corby) owns a carnivorous plant she wishes to feed with the boys.
The Butler: Grissom (Paul Wexler), a "gruesome" butler who, at one point, transforms into a Jekyll/Hyde-like creature.
Production Context
Directed by Edward Bernds, the film was clearly influenced by the successful "Meet the Monsters" series starring Abbott and Costello. It is widely considered one of the best and most popular entries in the long-running Bowery Boys film series.
