Poster and Ship Details

Artist: Walter Thomas (1894–1971), a British painter known for his maritime and travel posters.
Subject: The poster depicts the SS Twickenham Ferry (or a sister ship like the Hampton Ferry or Shepperton Ferry). These were the first vessels to offer a through-train service between London (Victoria) and Paris.
The "Night Ferry" Service: This service allowed passengers to travel in sleeping cars from London to Paris without changing at the ports. The route operated between Dover and Dunkirk.
Ship Specifications: Built by Swan, Hunter and Wigham Richardson, the SS Twickenham Ferry was roughly 346 feet long and could carry up to 12 sleeping cars along with passengers and other goods.
Wartime Service: During World War II, the ferry was requisitioned by the Royal Navy for use as a minesweeper and troopship.
