Dr. Gillespie's New Assistant
One sheet for the
1942 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) film "Dr. Gillespie's New Assistant," directed by Willis Goldbeck. It is the second film in the Dr. Gillespie series, which was a spin-off of the popular Dr. Kildare film series.
Plot Summary
The story follows the aging and overworked Dr. Leonard Gillespie (Lionel Barrymore), who is pressured by hospital superiors to hire an assistant. Reluctant to do so, he holds a competition among three promising young interns:
Dr. Randall "Red" Adams (Van Johnson), a clean-cut American.
Dr. Lee Wong How (Keye Luke), an eager doctor from Brooklyn.
Dr. Dennis Lindsey (Richard Quine), an Australian.
Gillespie assigns each of them a difficult medical case to test their judgment beyond "book-learning". The primary plot involves a "runaway bride" named Claire Young (Susan Peters), who develops amnesia shortly after her wedding to Howard Young (Stephen McNally). Dr. Adams eventually discovers that Claire's amnesia was faked to hide a past she was ashamed of—specifically, a previous marriage to a criminal and her inability to have more children. After Gillespie helps reconcile the couple, he decides to keep all three interns as his permanent assistants.
Key Cast and Crew
Lionel Barrymore as Dr. Leonard B. Gillespie.

Susan Peters as Mrs. Howard Allwinn Young (Claire).
Keye Luke as Dr. Lee Wong How.
