The Journey: While on a fishing holiday in France, an English curmudgeon named John Sidney Howard (played by Monty Woolley) is forced to evacuate as the Nazis invade.
The Children: He reluctantly agrees to take two English children back to safety, but as he travels, his group grows with more refugee children of various nationalities.
The Conflict: The group is eventually captured by German soldiers commanded by Major Diessen (Otto Preminger), who suspects Howard is a British spy.
The Resolution: Diessen makes a private proposal: he will release everyone if Howard takes his young half-Jewish niece to safety in America. Howard successfully reaches England with the children.
