Film Overview
Directed by Blake Edwards, the film stars Hollywood legends Cary Grant and Tony Curtis. It is famous for its unique premise involving a pink submarine.
Plot: Set in the Philippines during the early days of WWII, Lieutenant Commander Matt Sherman (Grant) is determined to save his badly damaged submarine, the USS Sea Tiger. He enlists a resourceful, con-artist junior officer, Lt. Nick Holden (Curtis), to "scrounge" the necessary supplies for repairs.
The Pink Submarine: Due to a shortage of standard grey primer, the crew is forced to mix red and white lead paint, resulting in a bright pink coat. They are forced to flee a Japanese air raid before they can apply a final grey topcoat, leaving them in the world's only pink submarine.
The "Petticoat" Connection: Along their journey to Australia, the crew rescues five stranded Army nurses. The presence of women on the all-male vessel leads to various comedic "gender hijinks" and complications.
