Our Day
Half sheet lithograph is a fundraising poster titled
"Our Day," created in 1915 by the renowned British artist Tom Purvis (1888–1959).
The poster was commissioned for a significant First World War appeal held on October 21, 1915, by the Joint War Committee of the British Red Cross Society and the Order of St John.
Key Details of the Artwork:
Purpose: The "Our Day" campaign was a major humanitarian effort to raise funds for sick and wounded soldiers both "at the Front" and "from Home & Overseas". This specific campaign eventually raised approximately £8 million (the equivalent of roughly £300 million today).
Imagery: The design features a diverse group of servicemen from the British Empire in various military uniforms, some visibly wounded with bandages or eye patches. In the background, the Red Cross emblem is displayed alongside medical imagery, including an ambulance and a rescue boat.
Artist: Tom Purvis was one of the most prominent English poster artists of the early 20th century. While he is famously known for his later, more stylized "flat color" work for the London Underground and LNER (railway posters), his wartime work was often more naturalistic.
The October 21st date also coincides with Trafalgar Day, a connection used to further bolster public patriotism and support for the fund.
