Star Wars Russian
Maquette Original art on paper original artwork for a
Russian movie poster created for the 1990 Soviet Union release of George Lucas's 1977 film, Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope.
Key Details of the Artwork

Artist: The artwork was created by Alexander Chantsev (Aleksandr Chantsev).
Medium: It is a pastel on paper, backed on card.
Subject: The piece depicts three original alien species against a cosmic backdrop. These characters are thought to be inspired by the creatures found in the Mos Eisley cantina scene.
Context: Because the Soviet Union prohibited advertisements made outside its borders at the time, Russian artists were commissioned to create unique, hand-drawn posters.
Unique Style: Chantsev, along with other commissioned artists, had often not seen the film before designing the posters. This resulted in "bonkers" designs that had very limited association with the actual characters or set designs from the movie.

Historical Significance
While Star Wars was released in 1977, it did not receive a wide theatrical release in the Soviet Union until 1990. This specific poster is referred to as the "Aliens" style and is considered much rarer than standard U.S. or international posters due to its limited printing. The poster also famously classified the film as a "Space Western" (Galactic Western) in its marketing slogans.
