Sleeping Beauty
Original sign vintage
entrance sign from the Sleeping Beauty Castle Walkthrough attraction at Disneyland.
Historical Background
The sign was a prominent feature of the original walkthrough experience, which officially opened on April 29, 1957. While the castle itself was inspired by Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria and opened with the park in 1955, the interior walkthrough was added later to bring the story of Princess Aurora to life through dioramas.
Auction and Rarity
This particular piece of Disney history was recently part of the Joel Magee Disneyland Collection, the world's largest privately owned collection of Disney parks memorabilia. It was featured in a high-profile auction at Van Eaton Galleries in September 2023, where numerous iconic park items sold for thousands of dollars.
Attraction Features
Dioramas: The walkthrough features spellbinding 3D displays and special effects inspired by the original Eyvind Earle artwork from the 1959 film.
Accessibility: Because the main walkthrough is located upstairs within the castle, a high-definition video version is provided on the ground floor for guests who cannot climb the stairs.
Renovations: The castle and its walkthrough have undergone several aesthetic changes over the decades, including a major "reimagining" that was unveiled in 2019 with updated paint and golden accents.
