The Flying Monster Rodan
One sheet movie poster for Rodan (originally titled Sora no Daikaij? Radon), a classic Japanese kaiju film released by Toho Studios in 1956. Directed by Ishir? Honda, who also directed the original Godzilla (1954), Rodan holds the distinction of being Toho's first giant monster movie filmed in color.Plot SummaryThe story begins in the small Japanese mining village of Kitamatsu, where miners begin disappearing in deep shafts. An investigation reveals the culprits are giant prehistoric dragonfly nymphs called Meganulon. While pursuing these creatures, a mining engineer named Shigeru is trapped in a cavern and witnesses the hatching of a colossal prehistoric egg. The creature that emerges is Rodan, a giant mutated pterosaur capable of flying at supersonic speeds. It is later discovered that there are actually two Rodans (a mated pair) terrorizing the world. The film concludes with the Japanese military bombarding Mount Aso to trigger a volcanic eruption. The monsters are caught in the lava; in a tragic ending, the second Rodan chooses to dive into the eruption to die alongside its mate rather than live on alone.Release and CastOriginal Japanese Release: December 26, 1956.North American Release: August 6, 1957, distributed by the Distributors Corporation of America (DCA).Key Cast: Kenji Sahara (Shigeru), Yumi Shirakawa (Kiyo), and Akihiko Hirata (Professor Kashiwagi).Trivia: A young George Takei (later famous as Sulu in Star Trek) was one of the voice actors for the English-dubbed version.
