Wilderness Conference
Concert poster created to promote the 10th Biennial Wilderness Conference, an event sponsored by the Sierra Club and held at the San Francisco Hilton Hotel from April 7–9, 1967. The artwork was designed by the legendary psychedelic poster duo of Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley (working together as Mouse Studios). They were two of the "Big Five" prominent San Francisco psychedelic artists of the 1960s. Key Features of the Poster Central Image: The illustration of a Native American on horseback with arms outstretched is based on a 1908 bronze statue titled "Appeal to the Great Spirit" by sculptor Cyrus Dallin. Artistic Style: The poster blends popular hippie culture imagery with the theme of natural conservation. It features intricate Art Nouveau-inspired lettering, a style characteristic of the 1960s San Francisco rock art scene.Variations: There are three known original printing variants from 1967:OP-1: Printed in black, silver, and green.OP-2: Includes a yellow ink pass over the silver, which is the version most commonly seen in art books like The Art of Rock.OP-3: A variant with distinct green and black ink. Logo Influence: The "Wilderness" logo at the top, hand-drawn by Stanley Mouse, was later adopted as the logo for Wilderness Surfboards.
