Winter Garten
Half sheet Art Deco poster advertises the September 1938 program at the legendary Wintergarten Varieté in Berlin. Designed by the prolific German advertising artist Kurt Hilscher (1904–1980), the artwork features dynamic dancers against a backdrop of glowing street lanterns. Event Highlights (September 1938)The poster lists a star-studded lineup typical of the venue's pre-war heyday: Main Acts: Headliners include Aurora Aström, Ray Vaughn, and the duo Bonell & Bay. Specialty Ensembles: The "Pariser Quadrilleusen" (Parisian Quadrilles) performing the original French Can-can, and the Ballet "Skandinavia" directed by Holger Bjerre. Variety Groups: Featured acts like the 4 Macks, Harry Steffien, and the 4 Smiths with the Ellerk Comp. The Wintergarten VarietéLocated on Friedrichstraße at the Central-Hotel, the Wintergarten was one of Berlin's most famous variety theaters. It was renowned for its grand stage and the "starry sky" ceiling of its auditorium. While the original theater was destroyed during World War II, the name lives on today at a newer venue on Potsdamer Straße that continues to host elaborate cabaret and acrobatic shows. About the Artist: Kurt HilscherKurt Hilscher was a prominent graphic designer whose style was heavily influenced by French Art Deco masters like A.M. Cassandre and Paul Colin, whom he studied during his time in Paris (1927–1934). He designed numerous program covers and posters for the Wintergarten throughout the late 1930s and early 1940s, often focusing on stylized, elegant figures in performance settings.
